The task of the police is not only to combat crime, but also to protect people and animals that fall under their responsibility. A living example of this is the stray dogs that roam on public roads, which can pose a danger to citizens or to users of public roads.

In this regard, a special course was prepared on this subject. The course included both theory and practice. Neighborhood police officers from each district participated in the course and were trained professionally and tactically to deal with cases involving dogs. The training lasted for two weeks, during which many hours were dedicated to training on how to handle dogs. At the end of the training, in the presence of the Minister of Justice, Mr. Rocco Tjon, Mr. Silvio de Mey, Chief Inspector of Police, and Ms. Irene Croes, the neighborhood police officers were awarded certificates.

Ms. Irene Croes, who has studied animal protection laws, was in charge of the theoretical part of the course. The practical part of the course was given by the certified police instructor, Mr. Coffie, and police officer Nicholson, who have extensive experience with dogs. With their expertise, the training was made much easier for the trainees to understand.

“I am extremely pleased that neighborhood police officers have gained more knowledge on how to handle dogs on public roads,” said Mr. Silvio de Mey, Chief Inspector of Police. The police officers can now attend to dogs in a more professional manner without causing harm to the animals. They can handle the dogs tactfully, and the dogs won’t get injured, nor will the police officers get bitten.

“I am extremely pleased that my colleagues have taken this course to enhance their knowledge and expertise in this area,” said the high commissioner, Drs. Ramon ARNHEM.

With the certificates in hand, the community can now be assured that we have well-trained police officers who can handle various cases involving dogs.
